Beyond the Walls

When writing Beyond the Walls, I was interested in how a woman begins to make her own choices after a relationship breaks down. I completed the written narrative before developing the images. In the film, conversations, pauses and moments alone leave room for feelings she has yet to put into words. Those gradual changes in emotion guide the story.

The bride faces the camera, while the woman on the moonlit deck appears against open water. These different relationships between a figure and her surroundings became visual references for constraint and freedom. Soft window light, fabrics and wooden furniture place her emotions within everyday life; the quiet, open deck gives her choices room to unfold. Sound and editing carry these changes through the film, following her as she faces what comes next.
